For an evenly loaded pallet the center of gravity sits at the middle of its length, so load center = length ÷ 2. Forklift capacity is quoted at a standard load center (commonly 500 mm / 24 in). A longer load pushes the center past that standard, so the rated capacity no longer applies and must be derated.

Half the length, all the difference

Capacity is always quoted as a weight at a load center, because both matter to stability. The load center is where a load’s weight effectively acts, and for an evenly loaded pallet that point sits at the middle of its depth — half the length along the forks.

Knowing that figure tells you immediately whether a load is inside the truck’s rated envelope or out past it. A deep load of the same weight as a compact one is harder on the truck precisely because its load center is farther out, pulling the balance point forward.

What is a forklift load center?

The load center is the horizontal distance from the vertical face of the forks to the center of gravity of the load. It is one half of the pair of numbers that define a truck's capacity — the other being the rated weight. A forklift rated to 2,500 kg at a 500 mm load center can carry that weight only while the load's center of gravity stays at or within 500 mm.

How do you calculate the load center of a uniform load?

For a load that is evenly packed and symmetrical, the center of gravity sits at the geometric middle of the length measured along the forks. So the load center is simply that length divided by two: a 1,200 mm-deep pallet has a load center of 600 mm. Uneven weight distribution shifts the real center of gravity, so treat the halved figure as the baseline and account for heavy ends separately.

What is the standard rating load center?

Most counterbalance forklifts are rated at a 500 mm (roughly 24 in) load center; some use 600 mm. The calculator compares your load's center to that standard so you can see at a glance whether the load reaches past the point where the rated capacity still applies.

What happens when the load center exceeds the rating?

Once the load center is farther out than the rating, the truck's rated capacity no longer holds and the safe weight must be derated in proportion. Use the load capacity calculator to work out the reduced figure, and remember that a longer or deeper load nearly always means a lower safe weight.

Does this measure side-to-side load center too?

This tool covers the longitudinal load center — the distance out along the forks, which is what the capacity rating is based on. A load that is heavier on one side also has a lateral offset that affects stability; keep loads centered across the forks and square against the backrest.
