Rack positions = pallets ÷ levels (rounded up). Floor area = positions × pallet footprint × aisle factor, where the aisle factor scales the raw rack footprint up for aisles and access (roughly 1.8–2.5 for counterbalance-truck aisles, less for narrow-aisle systems). Use it for early planning, not a rack layout.
Density lives in the levels and the aisles
The floor a warehouse needs is not the sum of its pallets — it is the sum of its ground rack positions, plus the aisles that let a truck reach them. Stacking pallets in levels shrinks the number of ground positions, which is why height is the biggest lever on storage density.
The other lever is the aisle. Narrow-aisle trucks reclaim floor that wide-aisle counterbalance trucks give up to turning room, which is exactly what the aisle factor captures. Seeing both at once helps you weigh taller racking against tighter aisles when space is the constraint.

How do you estimate warehouse space for pallets?
Work out how many ground rack positions you need, then the floor area they occupy. Racking stacks pallets vertically, so the number of ground positions is the pallet count divided by the number of levels, rounded up. Multiply those positions by one pallet's footprint, then by an aisle factor that scales the raw rack area up for the aisles and access space a real layout needs.
What is an aisle factor?
It is a multiplier that turns the bare footprint of your racking into a realistic floor area including aisles, cross-aisles, and pick faces. Wide aisles for counterbalance trucks push it toward 1.8–2.5×, while narrow-aisle or very-narrow-aisle systems with specialized trucks can bring it down toward 1.3–1.6×. It is an approximation — a real layout depends on your truck's turning radius and building shape.
What is a standard pallet footprint?
Two footprints dominate: the 1200 × 1000 mm (about 48 × 40 in in the GMA/North American form, 48 × 40 in ≈ 1219 × 1016 mm) and the 1200 × 800 mm Euro pallet. Enter the actual footprint you handle, since a 1200 × 1000 mm pallet occupies 1.2 m² and a Euro pallet about 0.96 m².
Does taller racking always save floor space?
Adding levels reduces the number of ground positions and therefore the floor area, so height is the main lever for density. But building clear height, rack and truck lift capacity, sprinkler rules, and load stability all cap how high you can go. Is this a rack design?
